He's just a stutterer. Most people who stutter have a phrase they repeat a few times to kick-start themselves past that "blockage" in their brain. It's always something like "Like um" or "yeah ah." Get rid of all that and he's making perfect, fluent sense.

For some people speaking in public is a terrifying thing. Not saying he doesn't use like-um on a regular basis anyway, but hopefully nerves greatly exacerbated his problem, and he will get past it. I'm sure he is well aware of it at this point.
