Synchronizing 5 Metronomes

This may seem boring at first but it is actually pretty awesome! If anyone knows how this works please post the solution here!

super cool!

It has definetly something to do with the swing momentum of all 5 Metronomes swinging together on an unstable surface/plane.

Thats pretty cool

Metronomes can be set for various tempos. When those tempos intersect, you get synchronization. Not that difficult to understand if you know anything about music..

its all about gravity ang momentum as well as you called physics. combine it then u got d idea

uhh..no? its called being a nerd..-.- i spit on this project and all of you!

Tina it has nothing to do with the tempo of the metronomes. It has to do with the rolling can's unstable surface which is causing the metronomes to synchronize.

for those that are confused, watch the board balanced on the cans. It is moving slightly back and forth. This is transferring the movement evenly to all the Metronomes. You can do five pages of physics calculations or just listen to Cup-O-Noodles and push the I believe button:)

Look at it like being on a swing. When you pull and kick at the proper time it is easy to swing, because the force you apply is aligns with the force of gravity and both pull in the same direction. If your timing is off, you apply force in the wrong direction, battling against gravity, and your momentum decreases. The simple explanation is that it's easier to go with the flow than to fight against the flow. Physics suggest objects in motion will try to stay in motion (ignoring drag). Using our swing example, the best possible situation is when all the pendulums swing together, so that the forces applied in a particular direction are aligned, making the easiest swing, and therefore, they go with the flow and tend to stay in motion. The surface is a simple mechanical device that allows the force of each pendulum to be added or subtracted to the force of all the others, according to their direction. These forces tend to equalize in the same direction in order to go with the flow, so they can tend to stay in motion. It happens because the force generated by pendulums swinging right pulls back on those going left, and visa versa, with the whole system tending to gravitate towards those pendulums whose swing was most closely aligned to start out. When two forces meet, barring interference, the bigger force rules.

Shit..Stop ALL your stupid Explanations?

awesome!! no way

I agree with Noodles. I believe its the cans underneath that makes them move at the same time.

You're All WrongJul 19, 2008 10:24 PM
It has to do with "sympathetic vibration" or motion. When the movement of the weights of two or more metronomes agree with each other, the board they are sitting on rocks back and forth in sync. The other metronomes "feel" this and are "encouraged" when they're close to being in sync and nudged around when they're not. So, what do I win?

it all has to do with the vibrations of the pins on an unstable platform wich eventually sycs together. For example if you jump up and down in the pool it will be off at first but in a couple of secounds it sycs.

TAug 01, 2008 4:26 PM
they rock on the cans so they all catch up to each other and go same time

"You're All Wrong".. That's a really dumbed down explanation of what Frankenbrain said which is a really in-depth, well explained version of what Cup-O-Noodles said, which are all correct. If metronomes 1, 2, and 4 are synchronized (relatively, not even exactly as they are in the end (within reason) ) then they will control the platforms movement more so than the two out of sync pendulums (forcing it right while the pendulums swing left, left while the pendulums swing right) which will force the swing of the other two pendulums (if the pendulums are swinging right while the platform is moving right, the platforms movement will force them, not instantly, but over time as shown in the video, to conform). The other two will not sync simultaneously but once the fourth pendulum is in sync it will make the force of the platform that much greater against the now single out of sync pendulum and the last pendulum's equalization will come that much faster. This is not a camera trick, this is not smoke and mirrors; This is a very simple demonstration of physics. If you want an easy way to understand this force, lean forward in the passenger seat of porche, have the driver hold the clutch in, rev it into the red and shift. You flying back into your seat is the same effect that those out of sync pendulums are feeling from the platform.
