this pic is no mirage, unlike some you may see in person driving west from slc. They are in an area where the water table is up, probably after winter. The water is highly concentrated with salt. Morton salt company is out there to the east. You know the one with the little girl and umbrella. Many people drive intentionally off interstate 80 thinking they can do a little 4-wheeling, and promptly go down about 15-24 inches in salty heavy mud. Others find apple and grapefruit size round stones and make hearts and intitials where all can see while driving that stretch. This area is west of the Great Salt Lake approximately 50-60 miles. Also Great Salt Lake is the remains of the ancient lake Bonneville. And finally, the bonneville salt flats are where speed frieks race their rocket cars, which is also where the world land speed records are made, and broken.

I live about 15 miles away from where the Salt Flat are. That is where they test cars, it is really hot in the summer, and if you are not careful, you can get a sun burn up your shorts from the reflection off of the salt!

actually, it's a dried up salt water lake. all of the water evaporates, so the only thing left is the salt. its a place i'd really like to go, but it looks like it would be really hot during the day.

Wow yeah that is neat! It shines as if it had a thin layer of water on there. Or is that just the salt? Neato!

The Salt Flats are located right next to the Salt Lake in Utah.
