Laser Pen Burns Credit Card - Cool Video Clips

I don't know what to make of this video. It kind of seem fake. They burn a hole in a credit card using a laser pen. Anyone know if this can really be done.

hmmmmmm... it looks real but iv never seen it done so i dont know

matt.wuz.heaSep 09, 2006 12:32 AM
HOPE it's real so i can get 1 of those

RazcalSep 09, 2006 1:45 AM
well its only a thought but maybe they put a hole in teh credit card and just positioned it so the laser would go right through it, but then again i dont know what to say about the smoke

RazcalSep 09, 2006 1:47 AM
wait nvm i just saw it over again and saw tape on the credit card so hell i dont know

This is totally possible. It is just like using the sun to burn a hole in something, just focus enough light in one spot and the material burns away (that is why they painted it black, to absorb more light) They used a high power laser "pointer" like these: http://www.wickedlasers.com/products_overview.php#green More videos: http://wickedlasers.com/gallery.php

They're called OEM lasers. They are very very high power. some can be seen a distance of 100 miles+. I've seen them pop balloons, cut electrical tape, and light matches. they are used by the military, search and rescue, as star pointers, etc. they are very expensive some can cost $3000-$4000.

yea this is real. My uncle has a green laser. I think you can only cut black things. He popped a black balloon once it was cool. He also cut like electric tape and other stuff. it cost him like $200. Its not a normal laser as you can tell. His has like 3 different like safty things you have to actually turn it on. so yea... its real.

The colour of the beam suggests it could be an argon laser. They look to have coloured parts of the card black to increase initial energy absorption. I saw one of these lasers cut through one of her majesty's bank note about six years ago. So yes it looks real.

chrispSep 09, 2006 10:14 AM
continued....as for it being from a laser pen? well the energy consumption to do that kind of thing with lasers has to be quite high, and to sustain it for as long as the do, isn't possible with small batteries, i don't beleive for a second that it is a laser pen. probably a mains operated system.

It is totally possible that it is real, but to me it looks like the green laser is not bright enough. I would expect the camera exposure to have to be changed to view the scene, and the parts of the scene not lit by the impacting beam should go black to indicate the edposure changed dramatically. The smoke on the other hand looks like you would expect. It is easier (cheaper) to get infared lasers than it is to get visible lasers. The visible laser may be the spotter for an invisible lzr.

As for Chrisp's power supply issue... My IR laser that can easily burn through a credit card (with a black surface) using very small alkaline batteries. And small nicad batteries are used in cordless soldering irons that take 10 times more current than a laser diode. The laser diode is very efficient, and it only takes a small amount of energy to heat a .1mm spot on a credit card to the point of smoke. If it needs power, nicads can do it. 12v of small nicads can start a car.

with a lasser pen

chrispSep 09, 2006 2:13 PM
it does appear things have got more compact and it is possible! http://www.megalaser.com/120mw.htm sometimes it's nice to be proved wrong.

Migs2000Sep 09, 2006 2:42 PM
yeh.. probably a little bigger then a laser pen to do that...

http://www.optotronics.com/ppl_product.php (the video at the bottom of this site shows one poping 9 balloons)

TheSnipermanSep 09, 2006 3:50 PM
weird video.... but i don't think it's fake

wuzSep 09, 2006 6:03 PM
i think its fake. because the light shines through the credit card but also the smoke coming out.....??dont know

wuzSep 09, 2006 6:04 PM
ok since i read all the comments, now i think its real and want one also

pysSep 10, 2006 8:46 AM
maybe they waited for the light to get warm and then they burned the card!? i don't know...

powerpumpSep 10, 2006 1:45 PM
this can happen i have seen it in real life. It is a special type of laser. If you go to a site called www.trademe.co.nz and look through stuff lasers have to do with. It is a really high powered laser i have one myself and i can melt plastic with it.

BeyondtheTechSep 11, 2006 1:42 PM
You can buy then mod one yourself, totally at your own risk. http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=648281&highlight_key=y&keyword1=laser

PendersSep 11, 2006 6:10 PM
dang, that's like star wars man!

FirusSep 11, 2006 10:03 PM
its real and all these comments say wut i was going to say so daaaang

matt.wuz.heaSep 22, 2006 5:46 PM
OK THERE called Oem lasers the laser is called spyder green 300 i have 1 :P 1000$ Omg it's not fake

YoungY2KillerSep 25, 2006 8:42 PM
Belive it or not, but the military already has lasers 10xs more powerful than this, they r using them so that they can disable objects in the sky or on land. They also claim they can actually make a human burst into flames with it.

ZeroOct 02, 2006 12:17 PM
Yes it can be done if you rearange the capacitors in the laser i have one my self and they take special battries it uses about 56 volts

blown chipOct 31, 2006 5:20 AM
This is not a fake....diode laser technology has made great strides.....

kicka10canDec 15, 2006 10:14 AM
yeah this is actually real, there is a web sight where you can buy these lasers, they are for military use, and cost like close to 900 dollars, it's a legitamte company too, i saw on eof these videos and it had a link to the laser site

SoundManFeb 02, 2007 7:53 AM
Dug up some interesting info about lasers, according to guinness world records (2007) the Spyder Green 300 is the most powerful battery powered handheld laser commercially available. It has an average output of 300mW with peak readings of 420mW - which is enough to project a beam 193km, at close range it can ignite matches, cut tape and pop balloons. By comparison, the average laser is 1mW.

i was under the impression that they were illegal.pretty sure they are.yet everyone seems to have one.suppose you all have night vision goggles too ya?
