It seems really crazy and completely stupid, but in reality, these gangs are the only family some of these kids have. Their fathers are probably behind bars, and their either raised by a mom working 2 or 3 jobs-- or a grandmother or sometimes even a great-grandmother. It's not a simple problem. The kids want family, they want protection, and they want love. If you've had nothing all your life and some guy walks up to you on the street with a wad of money, "blingy" jewelry and what-not, it's difficult to say no. Those kids need someone to reach out and help them.
