You are correct. The flares are to deflect heat-seeking missles. It's called an Angel burst. As in Guardian Angel.

This is an Air Force C-130 releasing flares to repel heat seeking missiles. The pattern formed by these "decoys" are how they got their name, "Angel Decoy". Maneuvers are usually in remote areas over water, therefore the general public does not get to view these excercises. I think it's absolutely awesome!

somebody sent me this months ago and I think it's beautiful ,don't care why they did it or for what reason...it's just very unique..wish we could really find out if this was a freak of nature or somebody could relly make something like this appear on purpose...It's still beautiful!

These are known as Angel Flares. They are a missile defense.

That plane is a c-17 globemaster III, and it is practising with angel flares that confuse enemy heat-seeking missiles.

so now that they have used their flares how will they protect them selfs.

look at the bak it is a american plane (ther smoke is sopouse to look like an amiracan egal)
