The trick to be able to do this is that your fingers will pass by each other at the top and bottom of the circles you make. The both go up or down on the sides of the circles. Break it up and it is easy to do.

I reckon I can just about do the finger thing in opposite directions, but very slowly. Just needs more practise. I can do the pat head / rub tummy and vice versa with either hand quite easily though. We are a talented lot! ;)

It is possible to go in both directions at once! I have been doing it since I was a little kid! Besides that one, I also can do the pat-the-head and rub-the-stomach at the same time. Here's another one: If you are a musician, while keeping a steady tempo tap eighth notes on one hand and eighth note triplets on the other hand! Not impossible but very difficult!

Well I can, and in both directions (what i mean is, one my right hand going forward and my left hand going backwards; and the opposite, my right hand going backward and my left hand gong forward). I practiced until I got it. That's why I can do this kind of stuff. There's another one, but I don't know how it is exactly, i think it is tapping your head with one hand and making circles in front of your stomach with the other..
