Can you believe that two boats actually run into each other with all that open water out there?

It's called auto-pilot. Someone had that on a steady course and no one watching. Someone, by boating rules, is always supposed to be on watch.

In this case, the smaller boat is to yeld the right of way to the larger. Guess they both thought they had the biggest boat.

What a load of crap 'me55'. There are specific laws of the sea governing navigation - including little boats as shown in the clip. I would not like to be at sea with you - Little/ Biggest has nothing to do with it - are your going to get out and measure each other's boat before deciding who has right of way - not likely.

thats gotta suck, and there were several people that got lucky from getting crushed. if you pay attention, at the beginning theres a guy right on the tip of the big boat, on the 10th second some one running away from the wreck on the small boat, and then on the 15th second, there is someone climbin up to the deck of the small boat from under the wreck

Big Boatie, actually me55 is correct. Small boats are supposed to yield to larger boats. If in doubt, both parties are supposed to take action, regardless. But then, I am used to being inside of a 350 foot long submarine. Hard to argue size at that point. Besides, yelling "snapshot tube 1" tends to get peoples attention.

I agree w/ JesseLee..they should start taking evac procedures..the little boat would seem most @ fault, but both ot of common sence should have tried to evade the other.

Thermo - yes of course common sense has too prevail with regard to ships, etc, but these are two smaller boats that collided- if you see how much the bow angle of the boat the camera is viewing from, has deflected by the collision, this is not a particularily large BOAT, as opposed to a ship. Also the height of the bow indicates that it is not that large that it cannot manuever as well. Still doesn't get around the fact tho that the smaller boat obviously didn't have anyone at the helm or on watch. Interesting tho that someone had time to pickup and turn on a video camera, but I don't hear any continuous horn/collision warnings/alarms coming from the bigger boat.Poor seamanship either way.

When in danger, or in doubt. Run in circles, scream and shout. There's more "captains" out there than you would like to believe..

There are defined rules for this situation. The camera boat was the give way vessel the other boat was the stand on vessel. Neither has the "right of way" both have obligations of either giving way to avoid collision or standing on meaning holding course and speed in order to avoid collision.

Size doesn't matter in this case!!Looks to me like the camera vessel was on anchor, facing into the wind. It would indeed be the give way vessel if it was under power, but neither vessel gave the 5 long blasts of the horn, nobody was watching from the helm of the smaller boat. Camera boat at anchor, smaller boat is at fault. Both under way, both at fault. Dangerous situation regardless.

By looking at the changing bottom color, it appears both boats were under way. The larger vessel was violating the smaller vessels right-of-way, however, the rule of good seamanship dictates the parties should avoid a collision by whatever means necessary even if it violates a rule of the road. It appears neither vessel was willing to yield the right-of-way.

They act as if they wanted that to happen. They weren't even upset after it happened."That was real smart
