Everybody has it wrong.. On a long flight the restrooms get full.. I mean FULL so at 30,00 feet over the ocean it time to dump the crapper. Water at this height freezes, any solids vaporize and turnto steam. If you say smoke coming from high flying aircraft they are doing a crapper dump. Just don't look up too long ! Enjoy the flight :-)

Waste water? Fuel? Either is ridiculous to dump..

Fuel? Water?! It's a cloud maker - that's what it is!

if they miss some firemen will get wet. but i don't think they'll miss as they drop the water from only 400 feet.

if it IS used for firefighting, then what if they miss?

Thats not water, its fuel! A 747 carries alot of it and they dump it to lighten the load for landing. At that altitude when dumping it expands into a vapor and it looks like more than it is.

its a 747 modified as an supertanker. it carries some 80 tonnes of water and is meant to be used in firefighting.

The pilots are jettisoning fuel. Not water.
