Actually, the word quartet simply means that there are 4 parts, not necessarily 4 men. There have been inventions made in years past that allow one person to play a myriad of instruments at once, usually percussion type, but also having keyboards and even wind instruments.

It is possible to go in both directions at once! I have been doing it since I was a little kid! Besides that one, I also can do the pat-the-head and rub-the-stomach at the same time. Here's another one: If you are a musician, while keeping a steady tempo tap eighth notes on one hand and eighth note triplets on the other hand! Not impossible but very difficult!
