Surfing Shark Scare - Cool Surfing Pictures

A once in a lifetime picture of a surfer in the water right beside a huge shark! I hope he did not get attacked by the shark after the picture was taken! This would have scared me out of the water for life!

This isn't a shark in the picture, though it certainly looks like one! It's a dolphin!

Da Big KNov 06, 2005 12:44 AM
It is not a dolphin look at the sharp point on the dorsal fin! Not to mention the length of the shark! dolphins are about 4-5 feet long this creature is over seven feet long! This is a shark, so now you know person underneath me!

ShijinNov 06, 2005 8:04 AM
Kudos to the surfer. It's not a dolphin HappyDaze... ._.

This is not a picture of a shark. It's actually a dolphin.

jimmybakerNov 06, 2005 3:20 PM
You can tell its a dolphin because of the tail fin. In this picture, the tail fin is horizontal and short. Sharks always have lateral fins, with the top fin normally being larger. Dolphins however, have a shorter horizontal fin, with equal sized flukes, which you can see in this picture. Also, if this was a shark, you would see a pair of pectoral fins and maybe a second dorsal fin. But if you still dont believe that its a dolphin, then http://www.surfshooter.com/DolphinInfo.html should help

jimmy baker u r a geek!

jimmybakerNov 06, 2005 3:32 PM
Oh yeah, and Da Big K or whatever your name is, all sharks dont have pointed dorsal fins. In fact, the most common ones dont. And dolphins are not 4-5 feet. The tucuxi dolphin is the smallest, and is the only one that is 4 feet long. Bottlenose dolphins reach an average lentgh of 10 feet. Killer whales and Pilot whales, which are both considered dolphins, reach 30ft and 20-15ft respectively. Everyone else who posted, besides HappyDaze, and who believed this is a shark is a dumbass.

cosmicmomNov 06, 2005 5:49 PM
You've gotta admit this thing does look like a shark. To the untrained eye with this angle it is completely arguable. The weblink with the photo helps a lot. You can see the angle of the tail fin resembles that of a dolphin. Too bad for the shock factor!

holy "somethingonthebottomofmyshoe".

f4phantom2500Nov 06, 2005 8:28 PM
actually, it's really just suggestion. if someone saw the picture without being told it's a shark, or a dolphin, theyd probably come to the conclusion that its a dolphin if they studied it a bit. look at the head. see how it kind of curves down from the top and the nose sort of juts out? if it were a (typical) shark, it would be one continuous curve from the top of the head to the tip of the snout.

BuckApeJoeNov 06, 2005 10:48 PM
It is not a shark. You can see by the pointed nose that it is a porpoise.

The SamuraiApr 06, 2006 2:29 PM
Yep, that is a dolphin alright, look at the nose. and the curve of the dorsal fin, and you can just make out the tail, which is horizontal instead of vertical, like a mammals instead of a fish.

Da Big KJun 01, 2006 11:43 AM
This is a shark, look at the pointed nose, the lenghth, the size, this is clearly a shark.

dolphins don't come in that size idiots!

SabakunojaganshiSep 24, 2006 4:01 PM
Happydaze, Jimmybaker you both are correct. This is a dolphin, look at its head, its tail, its nose for kamis-sake! my mother is a marine biologist and i know for a fact this is a dolphin, i've spent most of my life with sharks, seals, dolphins, whales etc, this is definetly a dolphin but if you think otherwise then i dont care. believe what you wish.

Body-HammerNov 17, 2006 9:48 AM
This has actually happened to me once, although i was not as close as he was, the shark was a tiger shark, about the same size, cutting through the wave just the same, about 10 meters away, on the east coast of Australia. VERY SCAREY MOMENT. About 6 surfers jumped on the very same wave, and went straight into shore.

ChristiCNov 26, 2007 5:44 PM
its a dolphin. see the FIN. its horizontal. that means dolphin

The Undead AngelJul 09, 2008 7:55 AM
What would someone have to do if that was really a shark and they were that close?!! cuz sharks can obv swim faster than humans, MUCH FASTER so u couldn't just swin away and hope for the best cuz if it saw you, you would know you were gonna die so....

chrisJul 16, 2008 3:19 AM
i hope im not stuck out at sea with you lot if you cant decide between yourselves whether a shark or dolphin was swimming around us.

dee deeJul 16, 2008 2:52 PM
it is a dolphin, you can tell by the fin... but nevertheless it's a sweeeeeet picture...
