Goodness!Are you guys still at this? My mates and I did this test in 1984 with a reel-2-reel tape recorder, & we taped the song and then reversed the reels and played it at normal speed AND moved it by hand to slow it down. Those of us who were not expecting anything didnt hear anything. Those of us who were told what to hear, heard "my sweet satan". I listened to this twice with my eyes closed and didnt hear squat. The 3rd time, I followed the lyrics..and I heard it all. Its ALL in your mind!

Talk about eerie!! Back when I was a kid, we were warned that these songs said something totally different when played backwords. This is the first time I've actually heard one for myself! Unreal! Scarey! You know, If you think its fake, try using a Christian song and play it backwards. I've heard these songs sing praises to God, forward and backwards. Would be interesting to hear what they say.. anyone tried it out?

I love how topics like these get people all worked up! I do believe the message is in there because I have heard it, but whether it was on purpose or not I could not tell you. Alot of people think the fact that it is in the song is crap but if you don't believe go get the old record and find someone who has a record player. It may takle a few times to get the timing right, but after my 3rd or 4th times I started to hear 'Satan'.

(from my post below)..Some interesting facts about the song are that one of the Led Zepplin members bought a house from a known Satan-worshiper, who held ceremonies in his home and taught his followers to speak backwards. To the locals, this house was know as "The Toolhouse" and in the backwards lyrics it says Satan took them to the "toolshed" to suffer. The guy who wrote the song (BY A FIRE!) said he wasn't even thinking when he wrote it, it was like his hand was writing on it's own. CREEPY!

Hello. I wanted to post here because there are many people who are ignorant about backwards masking. First off, it is a Real Recording Technique that was used by several sound engineers back in the late 60's and up through the late 1970's. Both page and plant deny backwards masking as does john paul jones. Jimmy paige was and still is very influenced by the occult and the teachings of Crowley and his thelemic followers. Every band has a backmasked message. When they write it it just happens. For instance my mom wrote a song.(yea I know) so she recorded it. so for the hell of it I played it backwards. At one point it clearly says "you're smart. you are smarter than the night." It's just the english language for you.

i know someone who knew led zeppelin and worked with them. they wrote this song but had no lyrics to it,but when recording the album needed one more song,so they made up lyrics to this in the few minutes before recording. the idea of this satanic idea came up years and years ago..and when it first did they were played it backwards on the radio and even they thought it was strange - they believed it was something to do with satan, probably because they dabbled in all that stuff. but either way, believe what you want,i just think it's a realy strange coinsidence

I played the original song backwards, and you do hear these words.. Also.. in the very end of the song, you can hear something like "play backwards, hear whats sung" and so on.

Backwards music and words sound creepy, and some combo of lyrics sounded a little like Satan (but not too much).
